About Me

Hi, my name is Jim Burton and this is my blog.

Why I Started this Blog

I am a “debtor’s attorney”.  I help people with debt problems.

Most people have debt. The average American has over $48,000 in debt. Often this involves a mortgage, a car payment, and perhaps a few credit cards or student loans.  Most people have every intention of paying what they owe, but sometimes, well, “stuff happens”.  Illness, layoffs, family emergencies, unemployment, divorce, and other crises can cause responsible people not to be able to pay their bills.

When that happens, then debt becomes a debt problem.

First come the late fees and the hikes on already high interest rates, then comes collection agencies with the demand letters and the constant phone calls, then comes the Sheriff with a knock at the door an a notice of a lawsuit or a foreclosure or the repo man coming to tow the car away.  We may not have actual debtor’s prisons any more, but a debt crisis can feel like a prison to those who are trapped in it.

I am a debtor’s attorney because I want to help people get out of this modern day “debtor’s prison”.  People have rights and protections under the law that the banks, credit card companies, and collections agencies don’t want you to know about. I want to make sure that people know their rights and know how to use them so that they can fairly deal with their creditors and get their financial lives back on track.

A Little Bit About Me

Because this is the “About Me”, you probably want to know a little bit about me.

I am an attorney at law, admitted to practice in North Carolina. My practice focuses on debtor’s rights, debt settlement, foreclosure defense, and consumer bankruptcy. I am a member of the Bankruptcy Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.

I attended law school at the University of South Carolina School of Law, where I graduated magna cum laude.  While there, I was fortunate enough to take a Bankruptcy course taught by the Honorable John E. Waites, Chief Judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina, which taught me much of the theory behind bankruptcy law, and to participate in the Consumer Bankruptcy Clinic, which introduced me to the nuts and bolts of being a debtor’s attorney.

I went to college at Clemson University, where I graduated with a degree in Computer Science. I worked as a software developer for over four years before going to law school.

I live with my wife and two lovely daughters in the small town of Morrisville, which is conveniently located in the middle of the “Research Triangle” of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

I love the outdoors, good food, and a good beer. I love Clemson football, basketball, and baseball and try to catch them whenever they are on the road in the area.
